A Nigerian man serving in the US Army has expressed concern over how some Nigerians manage to survive on ₦100,000 monthly salaries amid the rising cost of living in the country.
Speaking in a video, the man said he often asks Nigerians about their earnings during his livestreams and is surprised when some reveal that they earn relatively low salaries while supporting families.
“Sometimes when I do my livestream, I ask people questions, you know, how much you earn and stuff, they will say like they earn ₦100,000. And sometimes these people have families, like two kids, three kids,” he said.
He noted that the cost of food, fuel and other essential items has increased significantly, making it difficult for him to understand how people earning ₦100,000 are able to meet their monthly needs.
According to him, Nigerians frequently complain during his livestreams about the high prices of everyday items, including food, eggs and petrol.
“Everything is thousand thousand, food is expensive,” he said.
The US-based Nigerian also pointed out that workers in Nigeria are generally paid monthly, unlike in the United States, where many employees receive their salaries every two weeks.
He therefore asked Nigerians to explain how people earning ₦100,000, particularly those with families, manage their expenses throughout the month.
“Genuinely, how do people survive in Nigeria with hundred thousand?” he asked, stressing that his question was driven by curiosity and was not intended to look down on anyone.
“Please, I’m asking this question out of curiosity. I’m not trying to ask this question to talk down on anybody but genuinely, genuinely, how do people survive in Nigeria with hundred thousand Naira?” he said.
He urged Nigerians to share their experiences and explain how they manage their finances on such incomes, describing the situation as something that continues to baffle him.
